Recently, Marcy students attended a “Green” Presentation by a Recycling Specialist from Waukesha County Recycling. The presentation included the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, plus a 4th R – Rot (more commonly known as compost). The focus of this presentation was on how the 4 Rs could be implemented in the lunch room. The Recycling Specialist had some great ideas that could help minimize the amount we put into landfills, plus her ideas could also save us money. She suggested using reusable food and beverage containers as well as reusable utensils and napkins to help reduce the waste that we create.
Think about the items you use everyday and how you could reuse some of them. For example, cream cheese, sour cream, and chip dips containers all make excellent containers for food items such as fruit, veggies, cheese and crackers. We can also reduce waste by packing our children’s lunches rather than buying prepackaged food and juice boxes. This activity could potentially save us over $400 a year. To see a break down of the cost savings go to http://www.wastefreelunches.org/what-is-a-waste-free-lunch-program.html.
By packing our children’s lunches, we can control the portion size as well as provide them with a more nutritious meal. If you have any ideas that you would like to share with us regarding healthy lunch meals or ways to reduce items that end up in the landfill, please let us know.
